Question for college advisers and students with LD.?

Lets say you are a College adviser at a Community

college or a 4 year college.A student who is having

difficulty states to you they have a learning disability. Do you try to help them or tell them they

have no business going to college?

I have LD and in 1979 I was taking remedial classes at a community college and was having

trouble.When I mentioned I had LD,I was asked

to leave the college. Was that right? I did and to

this day I will not give that college my business.

Some of you will answer with things are different

today and people do not talk that way today to

LD kids.If thats true-thumbs up

Question for college advisers and students with LD.?
Of course things have changed, but I would be questioning any college that would have told you that. The reason is simple, they are there to teach and help students grow through education. Some colleges might have limited resources which make it harder to provide anything but traditional courses or make changes, however, me personally, as an instructor would go out of my way to help any student that both wanted to be there and was willing to put in the work. I am sure the Learning Disability you speak about may make it harder to handle some types of learning, be it reading, writing, math, science, etc. But that does not mean that you are hopeless and should leave, as you were told by them, that is just wrong.

Your sentences makes sense to me, which is something a lot of high school students who do not have any LD have a hard time doing. I would seek out some informaiton form some of the teaching organizations such as LERN - which is the learning resource network (www.lern.org). They may be able to direct you to programs in your area or provide additional informaiton to help you reach your goals. Good luck in your search and hopefully you find a school that you feel comfortable with and are able to reach your goals!
Reply:Today there is student disability services. You get your doctor to write a note stating what accomadations you need such as additional test time, private testing, abscenses etc. If this is not followed then Federal Law is broken because it is mandatory for state funded programs to obey this act for the disabled. However, it is much better to use student disability services and have documentation because without you technically have no rights to special needs relative to the other students.
Reply:The disabilities act gave inclusion for students. If you should go back to college there is a students with disabilities adviser at the college. Students who qualify get preference in enrolling in classes they also get untimed tests, note takers if needed etc. The government wants those with disabilities to get an education.
