I am looking for websites where you can find out about college life, read college stories, get useful tips and find out what is dorm life is like. I would also like to know books, magazines and gadgets that college students read and buy.
Also, if possible, I would like to know how much money is usually needed to cover the expenses for books and supplies in the freshman (first year of college) year.
You can also share your personal experiences if you want to.
College info?
CollegeBoard.com has a lot of information about college is general. It is a great starting point.
If you have any specific colleges you are interested in, visit their websites. They usually have an overview of student life as well as curriculum. If possible, visiting college campuses is a great way to get a fee for the school. Ask students how they feel about the college while you're there.
As for books and supplies, it does depend on the type of classes you take. I've heard the average for books is about $1000 a year. This seems about right. My expenses have averaged about $930 a year for books and supplies.
I'm a third year at UC Davis. I'm double majoring in English and Design. I've liked the experience.
College seems really scary at first. I remember being really nervous before starting. Once you get into it though, you get the hang of it. Colleges are much bigger than high school and the workload is quite different. Socializing at first can be quite difficult, as most people are focused on school. You can be a lone wolf if you so choose, but there are plenty of clubs and organizations to get involved as well. Classes are a great way to make friends as well. Don't lose contact with your high school friends either. A good way to keep in contact with old and new friends is through Facebook. It is sort of like MySpace, but less sleezy and immature. This is a great tool not just for keeping in touch with friends, but it is also great for finding out about events at your school.
So don't stress out about college. It really isn't as scary as it seems. I hope that helps.
