College Experiences?

I have some questions. I was wondering if you were allowed to choose your roomate in college, or is it just for small colleges? Also, do you pretty much have class all day like high school, or do you get a lot of free time to hang out with friends and so on...? I am going into teaching, and the best place for me to go is a small college, which from what I heard is smaller than my high school. I really don't like that idea. Does anyone know if larger colleges are more "fun" to go to? Thanks.

College Experiences?
Ok, well, I think I can speak for the larger, more "fun" colleges, lol. I am currently a student at The Ohio State University (insert your snide football/basketball comments here...though I'm mighty proud to be a Buckeye!). As the largest school in the Nation (Both landwise and population wise), I'm betting you're not looking at anything bigger than OSU lol. First, I did not choose my roomate when I lived in the dorms, but many people I know did. So, you can choose your own roomate (Though I would completely advise against this!!) IF you do not choose your roomate, OSU does a great job of pairing you up with a roomate based on if you're "Messy", you smoke, what your interests/majors are, etc. Also, as for the scheduling, it depends. Some people take their classes so that they have a block of classes, and they usually only have class for 2-3 days a week. Other people schedule so that they don't have as many hours in the day, but they have classes every day. So really, it depends on you. Because OSU is so large, we offer classes at all different times, which allows you a greater flexibility for when you want your classes to be.

Also, OSU is MUCH larger than my high school, and I absolutely LOVE it here. While it may seem impossible to meet people, I walk to class everyday and know at the very least 5 people on my way. There are so many incredible opportunities that go along with the size of larger universities that would not be there at smaller ones. There are also a multitude of unique activities that are available. I would definitely reccomend checking out a larger school!
Reply:If you're going to college just for the fun, just turn around and head home.

that being said, ANY college will be fun.

you live with your friends and all you have to do is course work.

whether you go to a small or big college should be entirely based upon where you feel comfortable.
Reply:1. I attend a small college also and coming in as a freshman, unless you know someone else that is attending the same college as you, you do not get to pick your own roomate...

2. Whether or not you have classes all day depend on what times your classes are...for example, on some days my classes end at 9:30am and i have nothing else to do for the day and other days my classes are spaced out during the day with small breaks in between...

3. My major is also in education and i can tell you that educational requirements vary by what school, whether it be private or public or small or large...

4. Larger schools maybe more "fun" to go to but the chances are you will not get the one-on-one attention you would if you would have gone to smaller school. Try it out where you are for a semester or two and if you really don't like it where you are, transfer somewhere else that better suits your needs....

Goodluck!
Reply:1. Usually you don't get to choose your roommate, but you could try.

2. Depends on the schedule you choose. When you register for courses, you can pretty much decide if you want it all day like in high school, if you want it on specific dates with Fridays or whatever free, or even take evening classes if you decide that you want to work or anything.

3. I'm in a University that's much larger than my high school and I like it. I always happen to meet someone new and that always means a new party or some fun. It's also good for networking than if I were to go to a smaller college.
Reply:Well I did not like college, I went for a semester and I am taking one off. I really do not want to go back in the fall. I did not like my roomates, and there was no way for me to change rooms. I was in a small college, and I had taken a lot of classes. There really was no time to hang out with friends, because you will have a lot of homework, and studying to do. well good luck, I hope it will be better for you than it was for me.
Reply:As far as choosing a roommate goes, if you have a specific roommate in mind they will most likely let you room with that person. But as a freshman you are most likely getting a roommate no matter what. It also depends on the amount of people in a dorm room. some colleges have dorm rooms with 4+ beds in it. If you only have one roommate in mind they will choose your others. Small college or big college, you can generally work it out in your favor.

Class time depends more on the type of college vs whether it is big or small. Some have an almost high school type setting but most allow you to create your own schedule. That way if you're not a morning person you could schedule your classes all between 10am and 3pm, if you wanted. It's up to how you create your schedule.

I'd kind of be interested to know how big your high school and how big this college is. But if you want to go to a bigger school then go. If one of your concerns for college is having a large social life then a larger university is the way to go. More students generally means more ideas and more money which leads to more social activities and opportunities. Plus with a large university it is possible that the town it is in becomes a "College Town" which means everything within it lends it self more to the college way of life.

My college experience had me having a crappy roommate my first year, and a private room the rest of my college life. I went to a smaller university because it was the best teaching school in the state. I liked the smaller school because I felt more in control of my classes. Admittedly, though, a fantastic social life was not a high priority for me at college.

Good luck with whatever choice you make.
