In about a year I will be heading off to a college. There is a really great college in my area but the tution is expensive. My parents want me to go to an okay college [ basically anyone can get in ] because it is cheap and they say that the school doesn't matter as long as you have a degree. So I was wondering if I should go to the nicer college or just listen to my parents. Is the tution worth it? Or should I just get my college degree anywhere?
Help! College?
Better college, no question. With what you want to get into you'll need the competitive edge of having gone to a more academically recognized institution. Advanced education is competitive and there will be people with 4 points from the ivies that you'll be competing with in 4 years. No name U will not keep you in the competition as effectively as a more selective school.
Reply:I agree with your parents. A degree is a degree. However, you could try going to the college near you but live at home. That would cut out room and board costs and all you would have to pay is tuition.
Reply:if you are willing to apply yourself and convince you parents that you are willing to put in the effort, then go for it.
Depending upon what major your are going for, what college you go to may have an impact on your job. Also if you go to a more prestegious school, you tend to have a better chance of getting into a quality master program.
Reply:go to a college financer center where you can see which one is a better school (either finance or the school's environment)
Reply:Oh my goodness. Beg them, borrow the money, do anything as long as it's legal and ethical to get to that better school. You don't have to look very hard to find people who "have a degree" who can't find squat for a job. Guess where they all went?
Reply:I think the tution is worth it. Even though its really expensive with the degree you get you can pay it off in no time and also you will get a better education instead of a normal education
Reply:ANY college degree is better than paying higher tuition prices just because of a "well-know name". 4 years of college, then to university, it's a lot cheaper then going straight to a university! . People do the math!
Reply:Don't settle! Go where you think you'll be happiest and get the BEST education. Anyone can get a degree nowadays, you gotta go the extra mile and get a better degree than the avergae joe.
Reply:NO WAY! Go into a better college! I don't know what your parents are doing to you! College of little diffrent rankings can mean flippin' patties at Mc Donalds or being a multi millionare! Just go into a better college even if you have to steal the money. ( I won't suggest it!) But just saying.
Reply:Try for the best school for your interests. It may cost extra, but there is money out there even if you have to borrow it.
Reply:Here is my two cents: a bachelor's degree (in most fields, with the exception of a few like nursing, engineering, etc.) is about the equivalent of a high school diploma. Most people aren't going to care where you went to school. You need to go to a school where you are likely to succeed (in term of GPA, involvement, and overall happiness), particularly if you want to go to a graduate program (like a Masters, PhD, Law, or Medical program). Honestly, from my experience, I think GPA and involvement are given much much more weight then where you went to school for your undergraduate degree. With regard to getting a job with only a four year degree--no one cares at all about any of the above things (you HAVE to have a degree for most jobs, but beyond that they don't really care....it is ALL ABOUT EXPERIENCE IN THE FIELD). All in all, I think your parents are probably right--although you are probably at that age where you think they don't know anything (I was certainly like that when I was your age), they have been around the block a time or two, and they probably know what they are talking about. Good luck!!!!!
